Just behind Norman's Bay railway level crossing, standing on a bit of high ground, is a property which we as children always called 'the white house'. I can remember it being the emblem for the Norman's Bay Sailing School. Do you know the history behind this property at all?

And, what have they done to The Star Inn? I can remember it being a lovely small Inn, just right for the smugglers!

have the houses along the stretch of beach from the sandcastle to the village suffered major flooding in the past?

Do you know what the emblem on the wall of the house roughly opposite to the medical centre is?

It is on the wall between the two upper floor window and stands proud of the wall

After visiting Pevensey Bay in the summer. We have been looking at buying a house to semi retire to. We have been looking in coast road, the houses on the beach, as a local could you give us some advice?

Are the houses on the beach safe or are they going to be washed into the sea?
Is the area safe and do the house on the beach get burgled?
Would you recommend a move to Pevensey Bay?

I have asked these questions to the estate agents but they do not really know and would you believe what they say anyway! Is there any other information on Pevensey bay you think we should know before moving there!

hope you can help us and congratulations on a great website!

Editor - I cannot give any advice about buying a property in the village, especially due to the venerability of the village to the sea, and the unknown nature of government funding for sea defence works.

However, the majority of the bungalows on the beach (beach side of coast road only, NOT Beachlands) were built around the 1930's, basically a timber frame, with cement cladding sheets, foundations consisting of railway sleeps driven into the beach. Many have been updated, improved and rebuilt and now most are of an individual style.

The beach is about the same state of it was 20 years ago, however there has been a period of neglect of the beach, as this is visible in the poor state of most of the breakwaters. Also the recent construction of Eastbourne Marina has affected tidal drift of the beach, necessitating regular topping up of the beach.

The beach front dwellings are exposed to the elements including high winds and salt spray, so maintenance work is a high priority and maybe cost.

For further information, talk to

Wealden District Council who control the area.

Environment Agency who has responsibility for coastal defence.

Pentium who are responsible for maintaining the beach

If you want a house, beach and view, there is very little to beat it.

You may want to use these on your site. Keep up the good work. Derek

Editor - Thanks for the information, I assume they are for the current work this year 2002.I am pleased you like the web site as my main concern and probably everyone in the bay is the beach. I have had the contractor Pentium, together with many government departments accessing the web site.

I was most disappointed to find no views of the centre of our village, surely a tour around it could have been inserted showing the medical practise-library,corner shops and parade of shops, this would have given more of an idea to visitors what to expect when they visit, and or course a view of the castle, for which our name comes from.

Editor - Thank you for your comments, I must point out that this web site receives no backing for the parish council / local shops or any other organisation in the village, however I am always open to suggestions. Currently this site gets typically about 5 hits per day, as is number one in many of the popular search engines. I am quite happy and willing (time permitting) to put visitor information on this web site and I am slowly adding more information and pictures as I collate further data. My main concern and that of many residents is the sea defences, which without, there would be no village, especially the properties on the beach crest and low lying Beachland. In 1999 there was a breach of the shingle bank and this appears to have prompted remedial work to be carried out and has provided short-term relief. However having lived in the village and seen the beach over the past 25 years, I believe a more substantial solution is needed for the sea defences of Pevensey Bay.
