PCAG News 24th September 2003

The vegetated shingle beach at Pevensey Bay is a rare wildlife habitat. The Pevensey community Action Group (PCAG) plan to install information boards illustrating some of the plants and animals found on the beach. The boards will be placed at various accesses to the beach at suitable positions for children and the disabled. The boards will draw attention to the fragile environment and add interest for everyone.

A local artist will provide the art work , a local printer will produce the boards, Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd will install the boards, and East Sussex CC and the University of Sussex will provide Coastal Biodiversity advice. The PCAG have applied for a grant of £4,440 from the Awards for All Lottery Funds to fund the project. Hopefully as a result of the project the Shingle Wildlife Code of Conduct will become well known and the plants, seeds and shingle will be protected. For further information contact the PCAG on 01323 766647.The PCAG’s project complements work being completed by Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd (PCDL) and the Environment Agency (EA) to improve and maintain the 8km of Shingle bank between Eastbourne and Cooden.

Without this attention The Pevensey Levels would be left unprotected, eventually returning to tidal salt marsh, in turn effecting parts of Eastbourne, Hailsham, and Pevensey itself. A key stakeholder group has been kept informed at all stages of the sea defence project. The group consists of residents associations, Parish, Borough & District councils, fishermen, environmental and heritage groups and has maintained and strengthened relationships. All stakeholders are encouraged to find out more about the sea defence work by visiting the PCDL office in the EA depot on Coast Road, Pevensey Bay, or by visiting their annual public forum in Pevensey church hall (around Easter).

With another 22 years of the project to run, working as a partnership is the best way in helping to protect homes, businesses and the environment of The Pevensey Levels. Further details of the scheme are available from the PCDL office in Pevensey Bay from project manager Ian Thomas 01323 761202.
