A new guide to ensure Pevensey Bay remains one of the top rural beaches in the country has just been launched by Pevensey Community Action Group.
The Guide to Beach Byelaws, produced in conjunction with Wealden District Council, Sussex Police, the Environment Agency and Pevensey Coastal Defence and funded by the Safer Wealden Partnership; comes as Pevensey Bay wins an Encams Seaside Rural Beaches Award for the 24th consecutive year.
To earn the Encams Seaside Award for Rural Beaches, the beach must satisfy 13 criteria relating to cleanliness and safety, one of which refers to water quality and has to comply with EU bathing water standards.
By using the new Guide to Beach Byelaws, visitors will be able to ensure Pevensey Bay continues to achieve the high standard it deserves. The information is based on the Environment Agency and Wealden District Council’s byelaws and voluntary codes of practice and covers issues such as prohibiting motorised vehicles on the beach, separation of motorised craft from swimmers, safeguarding the groynes which protect the beach, prohibiting the removal of shingle, and encouraging litter prevention and responsible dog ownership.
The guide is being distributed by the Pevensey Community Action Group to all residents of beachside properties and boat owners; as well as making it available to visitors through local shops, estate agents, caravan sites and the Pevensey Information Centre in Sea Road car park.
This is the latest in a series of initiatives which have helped preserve the quality of Pevensey Bay.
“This is another excellent example of partnership working between local organisations to ensure that the public’s enjoyment of one of our most valuable natural local assets is guaranteed,” said Councillor Jan Dunk, Cabinet member for Planning & Environmental Protection. “We are proud that once again the Seaside Award flag is flying over the beach advertising to all our visitors what a well-managed beach it is. ”
“We have already received a lot of compliments on its style and content from members of the public who have seen the leaflet,” said Carole Clark, Chairman of the Pevensey Community Action Group. “We hope it will make the beach at Pevensey Bay an even better place to visit.”
