2005 Beach - News - 5th August

Sospan Dau is now working successfully at Bulverhythe, and although she has enough work to keep her busy until early autumn it is obviously important to us all that we receive the shingle we need to bolster Pevensey’s defences before the coming winter. Since we have no idea as to when the first storms arrive we cannot afford to wait too long before starting work here.

Work at Bulverhythe involves filling beach compartments formed from newly constructed rock groynes and it makes sense for the transfer from Bulverhythe to Pevensey to be made upon completion of one of these sections. The current estimate is that a suitable point will be reached in about three weeks. This obviously does not allow for any time that might be lost due to bad weather or mechanical problems so could be considered the earliest that work would start – possibly some time over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Locations will be the same as last year – at Sovereign Harbour by the eastern end of the rock revetment, and at the eastern end of Beachlands. Work will take about one week at each site, and although not finalised it is likely that the first deliveries will be made to Sovereign Harbour.

Towards the end of September a major recycling campaign will be undertaken to supplement the recharge work. Often newly replenished areas are subject to immediate erosion so both Beachlands and Sovereign Harbour are likely to be included in the areas recycled. Again it is too early to have a detailed plan of action, but I would expect that we will start at Cooden, before moving to Normans Bay East, Beachlands and then Sovereign Harbour.

As I receive more information on Sospan Dau’s progress I will keep you informed as to when we expect the actual recharge start date to be. In the meantime if you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me.

Best wishes

Ian
