2005 Beach - News - 18th August

I have this morning spoken to the Sospan Dau and contrary to any of the other six beach recharges we have completed at Pevensey, the start date for this year’s work now appears to be moving forward not backward. The sea has been so calm for the last two weeks that the dredger has been able to operate at maximum carrying capacity and now expects to complete her current work area at Bulverhythe this Saturday – 20th August.

From there she needs to go to Newhaven harbour to change her discharge pipework to the familiar system used previously. She then sails for this year’s dredge area – Owers Bank – off Littlehampton.

Consequently the first delivery will be at Sovereign Harbour over the high tide either on Sunday afternoon or in the early hours of Monday morning. We expect to place 10-11,000cu.m of shingle on the beach, which should take about 10 days.

The subsequent move to Beachlands should therefore happen on or around 1st September, when 8-9,000cu.m of beach will be added to the foreshore over the following week.

As usual, as they progress, I will keep you updated on progress of the works. If you have any comment or query please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes

Ian
