2006 Beach - News - 30th October

Sospan Dau has now completed delivering shingle for this autumn. However things continued to be unpredictable to the very end. This time it was not so much the weather – although a brief period of increased wave activity on Saturday meant another tide was missed. Having completed a delivery over the 15:00 high water on Sunday, a fire started in her engine room as she passed Newhaven. The room had to be sealed and the engines closed down, and the situation was quickly controlled. She will now be making her way to the Solent to undergo repair work to burnt cabling in the engine room. This could well take 2-3 weeks by when she will be required elsewhere. In theory she would have delivered a further 1,500cu.m before finishing – another two loads.

We are confident that we now have sufficient material in place to ensure the integrity of the defences at Sovereign Harbour and as necessary will reinforce the area by recycling shingle back to the harbour from the east and use the stockpile when required.
