2007 Beach - News - 1st February

At last some calm weather, and hope that it will continue on into next week at least.

The dumptrucks will today finish running from Normans Bay to Sovereign Harbour and for the final two day so f the week will take shingle from Cooden and deliver it Herbrand Walk and Normans Bay East. They will finish for the time being on Friday, and the bulldozers will do their best to tidy up the worst of the ruts before the weekend. Any remaining smoothing work will be completed early next week.

Road lorries transferring shingle from Langney, around the harbour will also finish on Friday.

Gales over the last two and a half months have had a noticeable effect on overall beach volumes. Even though there is no threat to any individual part of the defences we will need to carefully monitor the beach and re-distribute shingle again as it becomes necessary.

Similarly, should we experience another period of stormy weather, we may need to import more aggregate before the normal summer replenishment works. If that is the case, it may be that it is too rough to bring by sea and it will need to come by road. This will not be something we would undertake unless absolutely necessary, but if it were the only way to quickly bolster diminished defences then it would have to be done.

At present we are exploring the possibility of getting shingle delivered by Sospan Dau in March/April when she regularly comes to dredge Sovereign Harbour entrance channel. Much depends on the weather, not only for the work, but how it may delay jobs she has elsewhere. As ever I will keep you informed of any work as it occurs.

Best wishes

Ian
